Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
I would say London public transportation was definitely a cultural experience for me. I had never needed to use public transportation here in the US. Everyone has a car; however, in London people actually rely on the Tube, trains, and other methods on a daily basis. The Tube was a reflection of the British culture. We don't have anything that resembles the popularity nor convenience of the Tube here in the US. I will never forget standing on the Tube during rush hour with people of all cultures. It was definitely an enlightening experience.
Why did you choose the program in which you participated?
I had never been out of the country before my study abroad experience. This was my opportunity to fully immerse myself in a culture outside the US. I wanted to broaden my perspective of the world, and I thought London was the best program for me to do this. London is an international city, and by living there for the semester, I was able to expose myself to a variety of different cultures. I wanted to experience life in a busy city, and London definitely qualified. I knew London had so much to offer. I also chose London because I was interested in British culture, specifically London Theatre and the British Monarchy. London is a perfect example of a city that preserves history while keeping up with the modern times.
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
I absolutely LOVED my semester abroad! My experience was truly life changing. I was able to create a life for myself in midst of a busy city. Going abroad challenged me to live on my own. It broadened my perspective and allowed me to gain more independence and confidence in a foreign place. Studying abroad is a once in a life time experience, and I encourage everyone to go for it! It will change the way you see the world, and most importantly it will change the way you see yourself.
How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?
I have grown in many ways as a result of my study abroad experience. London has brought out the independence and confidence in me. I now feel comfortable in unfamiliar situations having had so many new experiences during my semester. I find myself about worldly issues, rather than just confining myself to issues within the US boarders. I am now even more eager to travel and experience all that I can.
What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?
Immerse yourself in the culture of your study abroad country. Get out there and talk with the locals. I found this is the best way to fully understand their culture. Go in to the experience with an open mind. Enjoy every moment. Challenge yourself. If you are curious about something, anything, just go for it! Live with no regrets. This is the time to try new experiences. Take advantage of every opportunity.
