Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
During my internship I was able to compare Americans and Londoners work technique. I learned than Americans work in a more hustle and bustle manner than Londoners. Americans have more work days and less work days that can be taken off for a vacation. It is said that "American live to work; the British work to live". Through my internship I saw why some believe that the proverb is true. Now that I am aware of the quote; I hope I am more conscience of balancing work and family in the future.
Why did you choose the program in which you participated?
I wanted to study abroad, because I heard for many people that not studying abroad in college is one of their biggest regrets. Also my older sister studied abroad two years before me, and she still loves to talk about her trip. I chose the London program because London is the only study abroad program that offers internships. In the future, I want to work with the media industry. Through the internship I hope I would learn how London is using the new social media. Also there is a lot of history and things to do in London. I knew I wouldn't get bored.
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
The four months were going by so fast that I tried to make every moment count. Furthermore everyday my friends and I would try to do something touristy in London. For example we went to almost every museum that London has to offer, walked in the gardens, shopped on High Street, and explored central London. When we had a long weekend I would take advantage of it by taking trips to nearby countries such as Ireland or France. My experience was packed with memories and stories that will be with me for a lifetime.
How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?
I came back from London more responsible and independent. The reason may be because while I was living in London I didn't live an R.A. or adult supervision. I was lucky to have lived with 12 CSB/SJU students in a flat. Together we taught each other how to cook, and we usually explored London together. Towards the end we were like a family. The trip really showed me that it isn't the place; it is the people you are with who create the experience. I was lucky to have lived with such wonderful people!
What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?
I would recommend that the students travel before studying abroad. London is a great place to be located because you are close to many countries. I would recommend traveling to the farther places or places you would want to spend more time in outside the 16 week school session. The reason I recommend traveling beforehand is usually after the four months I was ready to come home. I was exhausted. If you study beforehand you probably will have more energy. Also I would recommend creating a blog and updating it throughout your trip. Family and friends will want to see what you are up to and where you are traveling next.
