Joranne is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Rome and Greece
Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?
I chose to study abroad because traveling has always been a passion of mine, and I wanted to get out to explore the world around me. I chose the Roman-Greco program because I liked that it was two, great, different location that would allow me to experience two totally different cultures. I also like being in Europe, and the ease at which I could travel to other countries around me.
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
While in Rome we were able to attend a Papal Mass. It was the mass commemorating the Second Vatican Council, a large piece of history and progress in the Catholic Church. Pope Benedict the 16th is such an influential figure and we were able to be a part of the mass, and got the amazing opportunity to listen to his words. It's an experience that I'll never forget.
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
I loved my whole study abroad experience! Living in Italy and Athens was such a great opportunity. I got to explore and see so much while doing it all with some great people. My study abroad classmates became my family, and it was great to build those relationships. It was easily the best four months I've ever had, I appreciate everything I was able to experience, and these are memories I will take with me forever.
Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?
There are so many benefits to studying abroad. Personally, at has taught me a lot about myself, and the person I want to become, as well as impacting my future goals. It also gave me the opportunity to meet new people and develop great personal relationships with my classmates and people from other cultures. Academically, I learned so much inside and outside the classroom. There is so much going on in the world, and when you get the chance to experience it first hand, there's no way you walk away not learning anything. The teachers are also great resources that give you great information along the way to make it all that much more fun and educational. Professionally, it taught me a lot of personal responsibility, and really helped me grow up as individual. Studying abroad, even with all the additional help that is provided, allows you to have the chance to be completely independent, make your own decisions, and do what yuo want to do. It teaches you a lot about yourself, forces you to make responsible decisions, and you grow to a better, more educated you.
What advice can you offer for CSB/SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?
I strongly recommend studying abroad to all students who are interested! There is so much of the world out there to see and experience, and studying abroad with CSB SJU is one of the best opportunities to do it. There will never a be a chance to do anything like this again with these people and all the help they give you along the way.
