Jack is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Austria
Major: Political Science
Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?
From the moment I came to St. John's the goal was to study abroad. Why would you go to the best private school study abroad programe in the nation, and not study abroad there? When deciding the program, I picked the language I had beent taking, and that was German. I decided to do a German minor, because of doing this programe.
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
Living in a dorm with people from Austria, German, and all across the world was perfect. I got to know many people, and how they lived their lives from no mater where they were from. They were so many nights were I would be doing homework in the main area, and I would start talking to another student from Austria, or as far away as Kenya.
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
There is only one word to describe my experience, and that is perfect. There is not one thing I would do to change my experience. I saw so many things I had never seen before. Salzburg is the greatest city in the world.
Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?
As a political science major it let me learn a grasp of something that wasn't America. I learn how other countries ran their governments, and how their people reacted towards that. Living in another country, and visiting others gives me a worldly view that other students can understand.
What advice can you offer for CSB/SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?
Make sure you have enough money. Money was a large importance when we went out, and for traveling across Europe. It is worth the money you will be spending though. There is not a night when you go out, or a place you go that is not worth the money.
