Emily Huber is an Ambassador who studied abroad in France.
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
For a class assignment one day we were required to go into the local market and ask about the products for sale, where they came from and common recipes they are used in. It was a great way to use new vocabulary, to meet locals, and to learn about French culture (especially the food!). The people I spoke with were very welcoming to my questions. I found that by making an attempt to speak their language, I was much more well received than otherwise.
Why did you choose the program in which you participated?
I chose the program because I want to major in French. I decided to study abroad as a Sophomore in order to gain an upper-hand in my upper-division French classes and my French tutoring job on campus.
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
I would explain that, although I went abroad early, I am very happy with my choice. It was necessary for me to grow into my adult self and to, as my mom would say, spread my wings and leave the nest.
How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?
I have gained a greater independence. As a sophomore, I feel much more aware on a global scale than I was before studying abroad . I have been able to reflect more deeply on my own life experience and also on current events going on now.
What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?
My advice for future students would be to have confidence in yourself when speaking a foreign language. You are doing better than you think! Also, not to be afraid to ask more from your director, who is there to help you.
