Daniel is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Austria
Why did you choose to study abroad and how did you decide on this program?
I wanted to study abroad so that i could better know what it meant to be a global citizen, and to bee pople and build relationships with people across the globe. I decided on the Austria Program because i have Austrian heritage and i was interested in seeing some of the places where my ancestors were from. I was also attracted by the environmental theme of my Study Abroad Trip.
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
The biggest cultural experience I had was on a trip to Bosnia, where we met a man in Sarajevo who had been a child during the siege of Sarajevo, and just listening to him talk about his experiences and about the futility of war and current religious relations in Bosnia forever changed the way i thought about war and conflict.
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
My overall study abroad experience was wonderful, its hard to put it all into words. I wish that everyone had the opportunity to experience what i did at some time in their lives. It changes the way you look at things for the better. You get to meet people and build relationships that bridge and geographical gap. I wouldn't trade my experiences for anything.
Based on your experiences abroad, what are some of the benefits of spending a semester abroad? How has studying abroad contributed to your personal, academic, and professional development?
As earlier mentioned you get to build relationships with people across the globe who you otherwise would have never met. You also get a chance to learn different perspectives and look at things in a new light. Abroad you get to build connections with new friends as well as your educators, which may serve you later in your life. Additionally you get a wonderful opportunity to travel to places you otherwise would have never got a chance to visit.
What advice can you offer for CSB/SJU students who are considering or planning to study abroad?
Studying abroad has the potential to be one of the most influential and fun times of your life. For many it may be the first time that they are entirely responsible for themselves, its a time where you get to grow and experience new things and go outside your comfort zone to truly live.
