Cultural Selective Course Descriptions

NRSG 206A:  African-American Culture/Health Care

 This course provides students with the opportunity to study the importance of culture in health care. It will build on cultural learning from NRSG 212. The course will focus on the African American culture in the health care setting in the United States. Students will begin by understanding their own cultural background and the importance of cultural awareness in nursing care. They will focus on diseases that are more prevalent in the African American community, with the intent of offering culturally competent care in these situations.

 

 NRSG 206B:  Health Issues in the Developing World

This course is designed to expand the student's understanding of the cultural aspects in providing professional nursing care to women living in the developing and under-serviced regions of the world. Emphasis is placed on attitudes and expectations for women from select cultures, cultural implications affecting health care, health issues and conditions affecting morbidity and mortality for women of select cultures, and differences in approach and assessment when providing health care for women in select ethnic groups. Students will have an opportunity to do further research and learn in depth about how history and cultural, political, and social climate, and gender of selected ethnic group influence and predict the predominant health issues and practices.

 

NRSG 206C:  Hispanic American Culture/Care

The emphasis in this course section is on the Hispanic/Latino population and client. Students will be introduced to the health care practices and beliefs of Hispanic-Americans. General cultural concepts with a focus on building on and complimenting materials in cultural learning from NRSG 212 will also be incorporated. Historical influences, contemporary issues, and both local and national healthcare trends will be explored. Health conditions prevalent to Hispanic-Americans will be examined with the goal of assisting students in developing greater skills in providing culturally competent care and problem-solving the disparities identified.

 

NRSG 206D:  Integrating Complimentary Therapies into Daily Nursing Practice

This course offers learners an opportunity to explore selected alternative and complementary therapies. This cultural selective is designed to introduce students to a variety of alternative and complementary therapies. A variety of therapies from herbalism and acupuncture to massage therapy and therapeutic touch will be explored. The focus of this selective is on the exploration of these therapies.

 

NRSG 206E:  International Healthcare

Insights into the health care practices of international college students can assist U.S. nurses to provide culturally competent care. Students will learn effective transcultural interviewing techniques and how to develop a mindset which facilitates effective intercultural interactions. Through interviews, nursing students will compare and contrast international student's perceptions and expectations of health care in the U.S. to health care practices in their country of origin. This course will examine the influence of politics, economics, and history on health care practices in different countries.

 

NRSG 206F:  South Africa Healthcare

Provides students with the opportunity to study or explore a variety of nursing topics at the lower- and upper-division levels. A minimum of three selectives is required; only one may be taken at the 100-level. Courses are designed to allow students to choose selectives based on their personal interest. All courses contain a cultural component. Prerequisite for 200 & 300 level: admission to the nursing major. Specific section topics may have additional pre-requisites.

 

NRSG 206G:  South Africa Study Abroad Preparation

In this course, students will explore the health care beliefs and practices of the people of South Africa. Emphasis is placed on how the historical background, cultural attitudes and expectations, political, social, gender and genetics of the South Africans influence health care. Select health issues and health conditions of South Africans will be addressed.

 

NRSG 206H:  Women's Health Across Cultures

This course is designed to expand the student's understanding of the cultural aspects in providing professional nursing care for immigrant and minority women. Emphasis is placed on attitudes and expectations for women from select cultures, cultural implications affecting health care, health issues and conditions affecting morbidity and mortality for women of select cultures, and differences in approach and assessment when providing health care for women in select ethnic groups.

 

NRSG 206I:  Native American Health Issues

Students will explore the health care practices and beliefs of the Native American. Using this information, students will develop an understanding of why health care delivery systems and personnel must consider the impact of factors of culture on health prevention, treatment and recovery. Students will also learn how the historical background, cultural, political, social, gender and genetics of the Native American influence and predicts the predominant health issues and practices.

 

NRSG 206J:  Introduction to the Border Culture

This course offers learners an opportunity to explore issues related to immigration and health on the Mexico/Texas border. This cultural selective is designed to introduce students to a variety of border factors including economic, cultural, health and political issues. Students will relate these issues to care of Hispanic clients in Minnesota. This course is required for students intending to register for the May term El Paso/Juarez experience.

 

NRSG 206L:  Adolescent Health Risk Behaviors Across Cultures

This course is designed to expand the students' understanding of the importance of cultural aspects of health necessary for professional nursing practice. The course will focus on the health risk behaviors of adolescents across a variety of cultures. Students will begin by understanding their own cultural group's health risk behaviors. They will then focus on the health risk behaviors of adolescents from a specific cultural background of their choice.

 

NRSG 206M:  End-of-Life Care Across Cultures

This course is designed to expand the students' understanding of how cultural beliefs impact end-of-life decision-making. Students will explore a broad range of cultural beliefs and practices around death and dying across the lifespan and discuss how this information can be applied to professional nursing practice.

 

NRSG 206N:  World Religions, Culture and Health Care

This course explores the world's religions and how these influence health care beliefs and practices. The course is designed to expand the students' understanding of the importance of religious beliefs across a broad range of cultural groups and the impact on health decision-making. Students will propose effective patient interactions that integrate health beliefs/practices, religion, culture, and professional nursing practice.

 

NRSG 206P:  General Cultural Selective Topics

Students will explore the health care practices and beliefs of a select cultural group. Students will discover the impact of the past and present political and social environment, gender, and genetic influences on that group's culture. Using this information, students will then explore the health care delivery systems of that group and consider the role of culture on health, illness, treatment and recovery.

 

NRSG 206Q:  Health Care in Belize

This course is a 3-week in-country immersion designed to expand the students' understanding of how cultural beliefs impact health care in Belize. Students will explore a broad range of cultural beliefs and practices while in Belize and apply this information to professional nursing practice. 

 

NRSG 206R:  Health Care in Ecuador

This course is a 3-week in-country immersion designed to expand the students' understanding of how cultural beliefs impact health care in Ecuador.  Students will explore a broad range of cultural beliefs and practices while in Ecuador and apply this information to professional nursing practice.
