Teacher Candidates’ Licensure Examination Performance: 2005-2006 Academic Year
The Higher Education Act of 1998 included a provision requiring all educational institutions preparing public school teachers to publish their candidates' performance on all examinations required by the state granting them licensure. Minnesota's Board of Teaching requires all who seek to be licensed as elementary teachers for grades K-6 with a 5-8 specialty or as secondary teachers of students in grades 5-12, 9-12, or K-12 to successfully demonstrate basic academic skills using the Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST or PRAXIS I). Prospective teachers must also verify their professional knowledge of how to instruct students in the grade levels for which they are licensed to teach (PRAXIS II: Principles of Teaching and Learning). Finally, candidates seeking a Minnesota teaching license must affirm their knowledge of the subjects they are licensed to teach (PRAXIS II: content knowledge). The following table summarizes the performance of the 86 women and men who attempted one or more of these examinations between 1 September 2005 and 30 June 2006.
