Myth vs. Truth

Sexual Assault is a crime of passion or sex.                                      Sexual Assault is a crime of violence with sex the weapon.

Sexual Assault happens to others, NOT ME!                                     As long as Sexual Assault exists, it can happen to anyone.

Only the young and beautiful are sexually assaulted.                       Survivors are of all ages, race, socioeconomic status, education,......

The typical sexual offender is a stranger to the victim.                     The vast majority of offenders are known by the victim.

Sexual assaults occur in dark alleys, parks, cars, or at night.           Most sexual assaults occur in a home (victim or offender).

Those who are sexually assaulted, must ask for it.                            NO ONE wants or enjoys being a victim of a violent crime.

A person cannot be sexually assaulted by a spouse.                          It's not the relationship, but whether consent was present.

Victims often falsely report sexual assault.                                        FBI reports less than 2% of sexual assault reports are false.

Rape  is a serious but rare crime in the U.S.                                      ~ 1 in 5 women and 1 in 71 men have been raped in their life time.

Non-stranger assaults are not as serious as stranger assaults.         The trauma is not less if the assaulter is known to the victim.

Saying "no" really means "yes.                                                            EVERYONE has the right to say YES or NO every time.
